The nearby village of Haughley (a walk over fields via public footpath, or 2-minute drive) has a post office, well-stocked grocery shop, excellent restaurant and a catering pub. Stowmarket lies a mere 3 miles distant and is home to the Museum of East Anglian Life. Close by is beautiful Bury St Edmunds, with its great cathedral, multiple restaurants and theatre.

Cambridge with famous ancient colleges and punting on the River Cam is only a 30 minutes' drive and Stowmarket commuter train to London is a mere 10 minutes' drive. Norwich is 30 minutes by hourly train. The seaside resort of Felixstowe is 30 minutes and Ipswich a 15 minutes' drive with sailing on the River Orwell. Golf can be found at all the mentioned towns - the closest being 15 minutes' drive.

Many National Trust houses are open and make interesting days out and Stowmarket has a super leisure centre with swimming-pool, gymnasium, tennis etc and playworld for tinies' fun. Wetherden has a new hard tennis court and club. There is a swimming and leisure centre also at Bury.

Southwold by the sea and Aldeburgh are within easy reach and make for a pleasant day out. Snape Maltings near Aldeburgh is famous for its annual arts festival instigated by the composer Benjamin Britten. One of Suffolk's most visited villages is Lavenham, thanks to its unrivalled ensemble of perfectly preserved half-timbered houses. Little has changed for many centuries due to careful preservation.
